As expected, Fresno woke me up way too early.
I didn't get up right away. I was just too tired. Instead, I laid in my bunk for a while, wishing I could sleep a few more hours. By the time I managed to roll my tired body out of bed, Fresno had already prepared breakfast for us. It was a modest breakfast, just some juice and what was left of the fried glark. We did a mock toast before settling in to eat -- “To early retirement.” After we ate, I got dressed as Fresno ran some quick ship diagnostics. Once Fresno was done, we detached the Jackyl from the asteroid that had become our safe haven for the night, and blasted off towards Mezr. Took us only an hour on full jump to reach our destination.
Mezr was packed, as usual. I disengaged the autopilot and set a course for Atrus, Mezr’s largest city. The city was crawling with DGs. We set down on one of the many landing platforms lining the city, and made our way to the main square. Took us about an hour to gather the supplies we needed (fuel, an updated NaviCom galaxy map file, a few spare parts for the engine, and some food – nothing fancy, just some fruit, crackers and juice). It would have taken less time, but Fresno has a terrible habit of having to negotiate the price of every item he purchases.
We threw all of the junk in the cargo bay and lifted off without incident. Once we were out of Mezr’s atmosphere, I uploaded the new map file to the NaviComputer. It took a few minutes to overwrite the existing one. I then set a course for Tanar, and activated the jumpers.
So far, everything is going smoothly. Hopefully things stay that way. We should be in Tanar in a couple of hours, giving us plenty of time to pick up the shipment and find a good place to settle down for the night. Barring any run-ins with pirates, I don’t foresee any issues.
Fresno is inside, watching the tele-portal. He seems to have gotten over his initial jitters and, like me, just wants to get this job over with and be done with the whole cargo running business.
Well, won’t be long now before we both get our wish.
